Draxis is a Greece company founded in 2000 in Thessaloniki, providing consulting, solution development, implementation and management of IT solutions for the environmental and agricultural sectors. turn2bio is an innovative platform and marketplace for the agro-business sector developed by Draxis. It targets the supply side of the EU organic market: an online channel where organic farmers can sell their products directly to consumers without the mediation of middlemen. Farmers will sell directly to consumers, earn higher margin, offer detailed information on their products and access a wider market. Consumers will obtain various information on organic food, find organic products accompanied with the appropriate certifications, and negotiate the prices.
How did come up with your idea for turn2bio?
Europe is the largest consumer of organic food and the demand is growing so fast that it will outstrip the European supply. However, high price, lack of credentials, and non-constant availability remain the leading barriers to the purchase of organic food. On the other hand, small organic farmers lack access to markets and encounter high production costs in their efforts to boost production but hardly get fair pricing of their products from the middlemen: farmers are often too small or unexperienced to negotiate for fairer pricing of their products, while the real profit goes to the middlemen. Moreover, their products are perishable ones and, if not sold, they worsen in quality over time and become lesser in value. All the above facts led to the conceptualisation of the turn2bio idea.
Why is turn2bio an innovative marketplace?
Turn2bio will not be another online marketplace of organic products. turn2bio will be a combination of market and library tool on organic food which aim to increase the interest in local rather than global food, while it will promote the health benefits of organic food through the library component.
What are your strengths
We employs 10 people highly motivated and trained to meet the challenge of today, while we have achieved remarkable breakthroughs, despite its small size. Moreover, for this project we have selected a very relevant business partner, the Organic Products Cluster, with more than 12 years of experience in the domain of organic products. O.P.C has direct contacts with important organic farmers in the Greek as well as in the European market and can be the key link between us and potential customers of the turn2bio platform.
What do you expect from the future?
As turn2bio is a totally scalable application, we expect that in the next 5 years turn2bio will have penetrated some of the most promising European markets, such as Germany, France and Italy, where there is strong possibility of its general adoption and where DRAXIS has an established network of contacts resulting from its previous activities.
